Hola! My name is Vonnie Campbell and I am TES’ Spanish teacher. I’m excited to have your children in my classroom again this year!

I spent most of my growing up years in Ecuador and Chile. I learned so much from the Latin people. Their language and culture are beautiful. It was a life experience I will never regret. Though I don’t have a drop of Latin blood flowing through my veins, my heart is at least half Latin American! I am married to a wonderful man and have 2 beautiful middle school girls. We are pet lovers but currently have the least number of animals we’ve had in a long time: our dog, Charlie and our cat, Jinx!

My goal in class for your children is to pass onto them the fun in learning another language and appreciation for other cultures and people who are different than them. (Besides, if they can enjoy and take in Spanish now, they will flourish in their required language courses in high school rather than be intimidated by them!) To that end, I work to speak in Spanish to your children as close to 100% of the time as I can. Since play let’s them drop their guard and/or fear, we play lots of games. With the younger grades, we will work on reading lots of simple stories to help with their language acquisition.

The older grades can struggle with understanding why Spanish is so important to learn. For that reason, we’ll take some time just getting to know and embracing the diversity we find in our own school and then move out to learn about Latin American cultures while we also learn Spanish. While my goal is to still speak as much Spanish as possible to these older students, I may use more English so we can delve deeper into topics.

After 4 years teaching, I find that the students who learn Spanish faster are those who engage in the classroom and try to interact in Spanish outside the classroom. They may not speak much (and that’s OK if that’s where they’re at) but they at least try to respond to my questions or greetings. It’s fun to watch them grow! As a parent, your support and encouragement are HUGE. If you need any extra resources (online games, apps, etc) for your child to use outside of class to support their Spanish language learning, please let me know.

Contacting me: Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child and/or what we are doing in class. My email (yvonne.campbell@boone.kyschools.us) is the best way to get a hold of me. Though I am connected on Classroom Dojo, I do not see when you might send me a message. I don’t want to miss your communication!

Please introduce yourself when you come to school events or even when your child sees me in Kroger. I look forward to meeting/getting to know you in addition to your child!
