August 9, 2013

Dear Parents,

I am very pleased to be your child’s Tier 3 Reading Response to Intervention teacher.  I have completed a degree program at NKU with a Reading Specialty in order to qualify as your child’s Reading teacher.

I will be meeting with your child 45 minutes each day to work on reading fluency and comprehension.  We will work hard to bring your child up to level in Reading.

I know your child already has homework to do, so I keep my homework to a minimum.  However, your child is in the bottom 20% for Reading in our school, and I know you want your child to make improvements.  A little work at home will go a long ways toward doing that.  If your child does all the work, please sign the assignment sheet.  Do not sign if your child did not do the work.  I pass out small prizes for work done each week.

1st graders will have a story to read each night except Friday.  Discuss the book and ask questions to check for comprehension. Please return the book each day in order to get a new one.  Also, there will be a fluency read or a poem.  Have your child practice this each night.  There will be vocabulary sentences to read each night.

2nd graders will have a poem or fluency passage to read each night.  The goal is word for word reading without hesitation. Also, there will be vocabulary sentences to read.  Sign the assignment sheet if your child did all the work for the night.  There is no homework on Friday.

3rd-5th graders will have vocabulary words and definitions to study each week.  Your child should be able to say the words and to match them with a definition.  Also, there will be a fluency poem to practice each night or a fluency read.  The goal is to read one word right after the other without stopping.  Discuss the poem or the passage to check for comprehension.

Another strategy is for your child to bring home an AR book each night to read with you and then take a quiz the next day on the computer to earn points.  I will not require this, but it is a great idea.  I have a library of books on each level that are ALL AR books. Your child is welcome to check one out each day.

Students in Tier 3 Reading may come to my classroom before school on Monday and Thursday to listen to books on cassette and cd and take an AR test ( comprehension test) to earn AR points.  My classroom is open 8:10-8:40 for this.  All students in the school are invited to come to Computer Lab #2 on Wednesdays and Fridays to listen to TumbleBooks ( online books) and take AR tests.
